Who Needs to Complete a Self-Assessment Tax Return?
Under the Income Tax Act, 2023 of Bangladesh, certain individuals and entities are legally required to file an income tax return each year. Even if tax has already been deducted at source,
you may still need to file a return to comply with national tax regulations and maintain a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). For example:
- Anyone whose annual income exceeds the tax-free threshold set by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
- Anyone who was assessed for tax in any of the last three years.
- Company directors, partners, shareholders, or employees of registered businesses or firms.
- Individuals who hold a TIN or are required to obtain one under law.
- Anyone who owns a motor vehicle, house property, or holds a trade license.
- Professionals such as doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, accountants, or consultants engaged in independent practice.
- High earners — those whose income exceeds specified limits (e.g., over BDT 350,000 for women/seniors or over BDT 300,000 for men, subject to updates).
- Individuals required to submit proof of return submission (PSR) for various official purposes — e.g., opening a business, renewing a trade license, or registering land/property.
